Overview

The Ford Mustang Mach-E was Ford's statement that they were serious about EVs. Using the Mustang name was controversial, but the car itself delivered — a stylish, practical electric SUV with genuine Ford character.

The Extended Range versions offer the best balance. The GT adds serious performance but at the cost of range and price.

Performance & Drive

In town

The Mach-E is comfortable in urban environments. Despite its size, it feels manageable. The steering is light, visibility is reasonable (apart from thick rear pillars), and the instant torque helps in traffic.

On the motorway

Refined and capable. The Mach-E cruises quietly with good stability. The Extended Range versions handle long motorway journeys without charging anxiety.

On a twisty road

This is where the Mach-E impresses. It's genuinely engaging for an SUV — the steering has decent weight and feedback, body control is tight, and the low centre of gravity helps through corners.

The GT version with MagneRide dampers is properly entertaining. It doesn't feel like a two-tonne SUV.

Space & Practicality

Front seats

Comfortable sports-style seats with good adjustment. The interior feels premium with a mix of physical buttons and touchscreen controls — Ford learned from Tesla's mistakes.

Rear seats

Adequate but not class-leading. The sloping roofline affects headroom, and legroom is good rather than exceptional.

MeasurementSpace
Rear legroomGood
Rear headroomCompromised (tall passengers notice)
Rear width2-3 adults

Boot space

At 402 litres rear plus a useful 100-litre frunk, total storage is practical but behind some rivals.

ConfigurationCapacity
Rear boot402 litres
Frunk100 litres
Seats folded~1,420 litres

The drainable frunk is designed for storing wet or dirty items — a thoughtful touch.

Interior & Tech

Interior quality

Good overall. Ford avoided the "blank screen" approach, keeping some physical controls for key functions. Materials are generally nice, though some plastics feel below the price point.

Infotainment

FeatureAvailability
15.5" portrait touchscreenStandard
10.2" digital instrumentsStandard
Apple CarPlay/Android AutoStandard
SYNC 4A systemStandard
Over-the-air updatesStandard

The large touchscreen works well, and Ford's SYNC system is intuitive. Over-the-air updates have added features post-purchase.

Physical controls

Ford kept a physical volume dial on the screen and climate buttons — small details that make daily use much better than rivals who went all-touchscreen.

DC rapid charging

VersionMax Speed10-80% Time
Standard Range115kW~45 mins
Extended Range150kW~45 mins

Charging is adequate but not class-leading. The Ioniq 5 and EV6 charge significantly faster. Ford's Blue Oval network offers some preferential rates at certain chargers.

The Verdict

7
/10

The bottom line

The Ford Mustang Mach-E (2021-2023) is a genuinely good electric SUV with real character. It drives better than most rivals, looks distinctive, and offers practical family space.

The charging speed is its weakness — significantly slower than Hyundai/Kia alternatives. But if you prioritise driving engagement and don't mind slightly longer charging stops, the Mach-E delivers.
