Methodology

How we score home EV chargers

Our ratings are designed for households in the UK and Ireland, rather than as a simple comparison of technical specifications. We give particular weight to the conditions that matter here: 7–7.4kW domestic charging, smart-tariff optimisation, solar integration, reliability, support and everyday usability. Features such as 22kW three-phase charging are recognised, but carry less weight because most homes cannot make use of them.

We also assess the underlying engineering of each charger, including electrical design, build quality, safety, load management, connectivity, metering, interoperability and readiness for technologies such as vehicle-to-grid charging.

Finally, we consider how long each model has been in real-world use. A newly released charger with exceptional specifications may initially score below a more established model because there is less long-term evidence on reliability, software stability and customer support. Ratings are reviewed regularly and can rise or fall as new products, features, pricing and owner evidence emerge.

All featured chargers meet the latest UK safety standards (18th Edition Amendment 2) and, with the exception of the Tesla Wall Connector, include built-in PEN fault protection.
