MG ZS EV(2019-2023) Used Buyer's Guide

The MG ZS EV is roomy, well equipped and great value, but it feels cheap inside and it’s not much fun once you get beyond town speeds.

Overview

The MG ZS EV brought affordable electric SUV ownership to the masses. When it launched in 2019, it was one of the cheapest EVs available, and today it offers remarkable used value.

Model variants:

VersionBatteryRange (WLTP)Years

Key changes:

YearChanges
2019UK launch (44.5kWh)
2021Revised 51kWh battery
2022Major facelift, Long Range (72.6kWh) option

The facelift is significant — improved range, faster charging, better interior. Long Range models transform the car's capability.

MG's 7-year warranty

This is transferable to subsequent owners. A 2020 car still has warranty until 2027. Check remaining coverage.

Performance & Drive

In town

The ZS EV is easy to drive — light controls, good visibility, comfortable ride. Nothing exciting, but nothing troublesome either.

On the motorway

Adequate for occasional motorway use. The original 44.5kWh version's range becomes limiting; the Long Range is much better suited.

On a twisty road

It's an appliance, not a sports car. Competent but uninspiring. The steering is light and numb; body roll is pronounced.

Space & Practicality

Interior space

Good for a compact SUV. Front and rear passengers have adequate space. Not class-leading, but family-suitable.

Boot space

At 470 litres (original) or 448 litres (facelift), the boot is practical. Rear seats fold 60:40.

ConfigurationCapacity
Seats up448-470 litres
Seats folded~1,166 litres

Interior & Tech

Interior quality

Basic. Hard plastics, simple materials. It's functional and durable, but not premium. The facelift improved things, but don't expect luxury.

Infotainment

Adequate 8" or 10.1" touchscreen depending on model. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto included. Native system is basic.

Equipment

Despite the budget price, equipment is decent:

The Verdict

The bottom line

The MG ZS EV (2019-2023) is the value champion. It's not premium, exciting, or cutting-edge, but it delivers affordable electric SUV ownership without fuss.

The Long Range version is the smart choice — the original's range is too limiting. With 7-year warranty coverage and proven reliability, it's a low-risk used purchase.

For budget-conscious buyers wanting an electric family SUV, the ZS EV is hard to beat.
